Why we measure your house before we quote a furnace
Most replacements copy the old unit’s size, and the old unit was often the wrong one. Here’s what a load calculation checks.

Ask three companies for a furnace quote and two of them will glance at your old unit and quote the same size.
That’s a problem, because the old size was a guess, too. A system that’s too big turns on and off in short bursts, wears out sooner and never dehumidifies. One that’s too small runs all day on the coldest nights.
What we measure
A load calculation (it’s called Manual J) counts your windows, your insulation, your attic, your basement and the air that leaks in around the doors. It tells us how much heat the house loses on a design day, and from that, how big the furnace should be.
It takes about an hour and we do it for free as part of any replacement estimate.
