First freeze this week? A ten-minute furnace checklist

The first hard freeze in Zanesville usually lands in the first week of November. These checks take ten minutes and prevent most no-heat calls.

Our phones light up the same week every year. Most of those calls have a simple cause you can check in ten minutes.

Your checklist

Change the filter. A clogged filter is the number one reason a furnace shuts itself off. If you can’t see light through it, replace it.

Turn the thermostat to heat and set it five degrees above the room. Listen for the blower, then wait. If nothing happens in a few minutes, check that the furnace switch (it looks like a light switch) is on, and look for a tripped breaker.

Check your carbon monoxide alarm. Press the test button, and replace the battery or the alarm if it’s more than seven years old.

If it still won’t start, call us. A furnace tune-up is $119, and we have openings this week.
